Odd
Heart Productions is a fledgling organization that grew out of a working
partnership with (a)muse collective. We spent the past year honing our
skills and the three of us found a vision of art, it's creation and
dissmeination, that is supported by a community. We sum it up in our
tag line, Raw Art Now.
We saw it on the streets of nyc 9/11/2001. People were in shock, spiritually
wounded, reaching out towards each other. Words came out of mouths eloquent,
tragic and free. The gravity and loss of the situation stripped away
the ego and turned us all into poets and heroes, standing thousands
strong on street corners waiting to be able to help.
That's Raw Art: from the ugliest of sitations that is the art that is
meaningful, the art that is the core of one person speaking to another,
the art that keeps us in this struggle to survive.
This
is the art we encourage and suport at our weekly flagship show, Penny's
Open Mic, where artists are encouraged to bring 7 minutes of work to
share, practice, polish and workshop. Out of this supportive community
night all of (a)muse's first season, Six Deadly Miracles, was born.
The 7th show, Michael Birch's "One Man Hamlet" was run 7 minutes
at a time, tuesday after tuesday, before he went on stage with the entire
show for a three night run. It was truly amazing and a testament to
what artist's can do with the space to play out their most passionate
ideas.
Penny Pollak, the host of Penny's Open Mic, developed her solo show,
"No Traveler" from short monologues perfomed at her open mic.
As it grew, and developed with Co-Creator Samantha Jones, The Frigid
Festival, one of the most fun festivals in NYC, produced by Horsetrade
Theater Group, drew No Traveler out of a hat and she had a 5 performance
run, getting the attention, collaboration and performance time a show
needs. By the end of this run she had solidified her show into a brilliant
statement on the nature of suicide and it contained one of the cleverest
bits of slapstick clowning, while "stuck" inside a washtub
bucket, ever performed.
Watching
this show develop through the fesitval experience threw in to clear
relief that the process involved in creating art needs many performances,
many venues and a lot of exposure to criticism and acclaim. These needs
call for an organization to fund artisict development. So Odd Heart
Productions was created by Penny Pollak, marsha, and Mike Milazzo.
Be
sure to check back in this space as Odd Heart Productions creates a
logo, solidifies it's next season of shows and offers information on
how to work with us or to hire the amazing creative people we collaborate
with on a regular basis.
Welcome
to our Odd Heart.
